Beginning in 2016, if you buy an Asus handset, it will have AdBlock Plus loaded on the phone’s browser by default. As you can imagine, this is not going down well with everyone. Many large and small online companies depend on revenue from ads to stay afloat.
Sure, the 15 million people using an Asus Browser are a drop in the bucket compared with the much larger number of Chrome and Safari users, but having AdBlock Plus loaded by default sets a precedent that is not good for developers. This will hurt a lot of companies.
If other manufacturers decide to follow Asus with this, some developers might have to charge for their apps instead of allowing consumers to have them for free. It is understandable that smartphone users do not want to be inundated by ads every time they load up a website though. Apple allows iPhone users to block apps on mobile Safari, but this is not a feature that is set up by default. With iOS 9, Apple allows users to download an ad blocking app from the App Store. Asus is taking care of it for users.

Even though AdBlock has a program that will allow certain “Acceptable Ads” to go through as long as advertisers follow certain rules, smartphone users still have the last word. “Acceptable Ads” can be disabled by changing settings on the phone. It will be interesting to see what happens and if others follow suit. Stay tuned.
