Apple won a court in a patent troll WiLAN, who was trying to get $ 248 million for patent infringement which takes place in the production of Apple. According to the federal jury, the iPhone maker did not violate patents owned by the plaintiff regarding wireless technology. The jury also concluded that the two patents in question in the suit are invalid.
During the pleadings Apple insisted that the iPhone and iPad are used chips made by Qualcomm, that do not use technology patented by WiLAN.
According to one analyst Cantor Fitzgerald, the court’s decision is “a turning point” because the agreement with Apple would cover the legal costs, which led to the fact that the company ended the quarter losses.
Currently WiLAN reviewing options for further action. The company “does not believe that the previously signed license agreements concerning these patents suffer from the decision of the court.”
In the second quarter, the losing party has received $ 19.9 million, but the costs of litigation were so great that the results of the quarter were a loss of $ 762,000.
The claim was directed not only against Apple, but also against HTC, Hewlett-Packard and Novatel Wireless, however, these companies would prefer to negotiate with Wi-Lan. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Among those who once went into an agreement with WiLAN, are registered as companies Samsung Electronics and Intel.
